Butterfly

BUTTERFLY was an entrant in the 2014 Secondary Schools Sculpture competition.

The sculpture is suspended from a vertical cantilevering support providing flexibility to move under wind loading. It is connected to the pole by a spring, which allows for movement under wind action.

This work takes its reference from the Monarch Butterfly, so the site where it stands, leading into the garden area in the South Domain, is in perfect harmony with this.

The sculpture celebrates our natural environment and is a reminder that the number of Monarch butterflies is rapidly diminishing.

The fact that this exciting contemporary work is the design of a Taupo student further strengthens its relevance: it is an inspiration for the youth of our town bringing art and culture to the community in its truest form.
